ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF ESSENTIAL OILS AGAINST PATHOGENS OF IMPORTANCE IN CAPRINE AND OVINE MASTITIS

ABSTRACT Mastitis is an important infirmity that affects dairy goats and sheep flocks. Antimicrobials are widely used in mastitis therapy; however, the phenomenon of bacterial resistance has sparked interest therapeutic alternatives, especially research on essential oils from several plant species. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate antimicrobial activity against pathogens importance caprine ovine mastitis. The were obtained by hydrodistillation chemical composition was analyzed gas chromatography coupled mass spectrometry (GC-MS). minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) bactericidal (MBC) tests performed (EO) four plants. Fifteen isolates, previously identified as Staphylococcus spp. aureus, used. following species 15 isolates: Lippia origanoides “alecrim pimenta,” alba “erva cidreira,” Cymbopogon citratus “capim-santo,” Ocimum basilicum “manjericão.” first three presented 100% isolates (15/15), with MICs 560 µg mL-1, 1,173 1,280 MBCs 613 1,226 1,333 respectively. Nevertheless, oil O. basilicum, which also tested, exerted no any isolates. Carvacrol, citral, geraniol, estragole some major compounds found. These results can aid other studies aim use these potential products for subsequent treatment small ruminants.
